Solar Eclipse Splash

Monday, August 21, 2017

Celebrate the solar eclipse at the library!

Event Update:
Due to overwhelming interest in the solar eclipse, supplies will be limited on a first come, first serve basis. The event is on, rain or shine. Viewing the eclipse via live coverage from NASA or the Weather Channel will be available regardless of the weather.

You can help us by:
-Bringing your solar eclipse glasses if you have them
-Bringing a lawn chair to sit on
-If you’d like to bring your own t-shirt to decorate, it would be welcome.
-Sharing this info!

Original Information:
Everyone is invited to come to the Solar Eclipse Party at the Independence Public Library from 12:00 to 2:00 pm for one last splash before school begins!

  • Live coverage of the event
  • Use eclipse glasses (as supplies last) or an indirect viewer to view the actual eclipse around 1:10*
  • Make a model of the eclipse.
  • Decorate a tote bag with a special eclipse image!  If you would rather decorate a
t-shirt, please bring one with you.
  • Make your own star constellations with marshmallows and toothpicks.
  • View a solar oven and see it baking muffins*
  • Free hot dogs, chips, and drinks will be served from 12:30 - 1:00 pm.
Information about exchanging eclipse glasses if you received them at David Voigts solar eclipse program is here.

Contact the library at 319-334-2470 or email for more information.

*If it is raining or cloudy, these activities will not be possible.  Hope for sunny weather!!
